Patrick Hall from Fstoppers.com approached me last September with the idea of photographing some wakeboarding or kiteboarding in a studio setting. We ended up choosing wakeboarding and came up with this elaborate plan of ropes, lights, and water. Check out the behind the scenes video blog post here.. Behind the scenes video

What are your thoughts and opinions of this idea? Is this selling out or could it actually have some merit as a photography style for wakeboarding or kiteboarding? Let the flood gates open!

wakeboarding, snowboarding, kiteboarding, they are all about the environment they are done in, why take that away?

Are you fucking serious? look at this douche... technically he's not even wakeboarding. You could label the picture "dude with wakeboard on feet and handle in his hand while a bucket of water got chucked in his face"... but that most certainly isn't wakeboarding and in my books is about as gay as shit gets. So that being said I'm sure most kite brands would froth at the idea, you will probably make heaps.

You're right, it isn't wakeboarding. It's a vision of what wakeboarding might look like from an artist's view point of the sport. This style also appeals to a much broader audience and if you're an industry looking for more customers, companies might as you put it, "froth at the idea."

Besides hating the idea of hanging and posing for pictures, did you like the vid?

No offense mate but any "customer" who this appeals to is probably a halfwit.

It's also been done before. Not just by snowboard and skate companies but also by a kiteboard company (Xenon) about a year ago so from an "artistic viewpoint" (which I guess is what's important to you) it's unoriginal.... as well as being lame.

Some nice riding in the video mind, but then it was just a bunch of dudes in a warehouse with some sort of sex swing/ wakeboard combo faking an image.

Thats right, you can now get high quality wakeboarding studio shots without being able to stand on a board, the ultimate is claiming. Whilst I respect that photographers like to experiment, this is just pushing it too far.

A newspaper in the UK did a shoot like this with Hadlow a few years back.

I also didn't watch the video but that guys riding face is hilarious.

Regarding the "artist's viewpoint of the sport" spiel, I think some people's objection is that this isn't an artist's viewpoint of the sport; it isn't the sport. I can see how this could possibly be adopted for catalogues and stuff where showing the gear is what's important but from an artistic perspective it's almost entirely free from merit. You've removed pretty much every factor that makes sports photography either difficult or worthwhile; the riding isn't impressive because there is no riding, the lighting isn't impressive because it's so much easier to get the look you want when the only lights you have are studio lights and you don't need to account for natural light and the composition isn't impressive because. . .well, there isn't any. It's just a photo of a dude in the dark, there's no context at all.

Not wakeboarding and not really the kind of artistic that any wakeboarder would look for in photographs or their sport.
